Scotland is one of my absolute favorite countries, and I just can’t stop going back! While in college, I spent a semester at the University of Glasgow, which gave me the perfect excuse to explore as much of the country as possible. Over the years, I’ve covered a lot of ground, from the rolling landscapes of Ayrshire and the rugged coastlines of East Lothian to the wild beauty of Orkney and the remote Isles of Lewis and Harris.
If you’re planning your own Scotland adventure, here are 10 incredible scenic places you won’t want to miss.

1. Isle of Skye
The Isle of Skye is straight out of a fairytale, with its dramatic cliffs, lush green valleys, and famous landmarks like the Old Man of Storr and the Fairy Pools. Whether you’re road-tripping across the island or hiking to hidden gems, Skye is a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers alike. The colorful Portree, pictured above, makes for the perfect home base when exploring the island.
2. Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh
For one of the best views of Edinburgh, hike up Arthur’s Seat, an ancient volcano that towers over the city. It’s a fairly easy trek and totally worth it for the stunning panoramic views of Scotland’s capital. Perfect for catching sunrise or sunset!
3. Glenfinnan Viaduct
If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ll definitely recognize Glenfinnan Viaduct, the iconic railway bridge featured in the Hogwarts Express scenes. Even if you’re not into wizardry, the surrounding Highlands scenery is breathtaking and well worth the visit. During the summer, I recommend booking a ride on the Jacobite Steam train, pictured below, to ride across it and take in the views. You can also hike up the hill to photograph trains as they cross the viaduct.
4. Isle of Lewis
The Isle of Lewis is known for its ancient history and rugged beauty. Don’t miss the Callanish Standing Stones, a Neolithic site older than Stonehenge! The island also offers stunning cliffs and plenty of opportunities to experience Gaelic culture.
5. Isle of Harris
Just south of Lewis, the Isle of Harris is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Luskentyre Beach, with its turquoise waters and soft white sands, could easily be mistaken for the Caribbean, except with way fewer crowds!
6. Orkney
The Orkney Islands are packed with history, from Viking heritage to prehistoric sites like Skara Brae, a well-preserved Neolithic village. Orkney’s wild coastal landscapes and friendly locals make it a fantastic off-the-beaten-path destination.
7. Applecross
Getting to Applecross is half the adventure! The famous Bealach na Bà pass is one of the most scenic (and nerve-wracking) drives in Scotland, leading to a remote village with incredible views, charming cottages, and grab some seafood at the Applecross Inn.
8. Glencoe
Glencoe is the definition of epic Highland scenery – dramatic mountains, winding roads, and misty glens. Whether you’re a hiker, a history buff, or just love a good road trip, Glencoe is one of Scotland’s most awe-inspiring locations.
While you’re here, go for some wild swimming at The Meeting of the Three Waters and drive down the Glen Etive road, as made famous by the James Bond film Skyfall.
9. Isle of Iona
This tiny island off the coast of Mull is one of Scotland’s most peaceful and spiritual places. Visit the historic Iona Abbey, take a boat trip to see puffins and the basalt columns of Staffa, or simply enjoy the serene beauty of the island’s beaches and countryside. There are no cars on the island!
10. Eilean Donan Castle
No Scotland itinerary is complete without a visit to Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most photographed castles in the world. Sitting on a small island where three lochs meet, this stunning medieval fortress is a dream destination for history lovers and photographers.
Whether you’re planning your first trip to Scotland or returning for another adventure, these destinations showcase the country’s natural beauty, rich history, and unforgettable charm. Which one would you visit first?
