One of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had was doing an open-door helicopter flight over NYC, and I’ve been lucky enough to do it twice. There’s nothing quite like being strapped in and having a helicopter turn sideways over skyscrapers, leaving you staring straight down from a long way up. But as a photographer, there’s no better way to capture the cityscape. We circled around the One World Trade Center, over the Statue of Liberty, across Central Park, and past the Empire State Building. You’re even able to stick your feet out over the water to take a shelfie (shoe selfie), as they’ve dubbed it over at FlyNYOn. It’s quite windy, I must say. And the second time, I did the whole thing barefoot. But I digress – the experience is both thrilling and terrifying, and while I wanted to kiss the ground when we landed, I would do it again in a heartbeat. There’s just no other way to capture these kind of photos.
